Vigil
| Instrumentation | 3-2-3-3 / 4-3-3-1 / Harp, Piano, Timp+3, Strings |
| Length | 10 minutes |
| Difficulty | moderately difficult |
| Comments | Composed in a neo-romantic but modern American style, Vigil is a lyrical and dramatic work, appropriate for serious orchestral concerts. The mysterious and and expansive qualities of the Vespers services of the Russian Orthodox church were a central sources of inspiration for the soundscape and color of the piece. The work opens and closes with extended lyrical sections which evoke the devotational chants of the Vespers. A central, driving allegro section brings the work to an ominous climax. |
